Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Shared Senior Residence
A visit tells you more than any website. Bring this checklist to every tour, in person or by video call.
Before the visit
- Confirm the address and whether the visit is in person or by video.
- Bring a list of medications, routines and must-haves to discuss (not to hand over).
- If you are helping a parent, bring them along or set up a video call so they can ask their own questions.
Cost and paperwork
- What is the monthly rate for this specific room?
- What does it include: utilities, meals, furnishings, transportation?
- Are there deposits, move-in fees or application fees?
- How much notice is needed to move out?
Daily life
- How are meals handled, and can special diets be accommodated?
- How are rides to appointments arranged?
- What are the house guidelines on visitors, quiet hours and shared spaces?
- Who do residents call if something needs repair?
Safety and fit
- Who is the main point of contact day to day?
- How are emergencies handled?
- Are there grab bars or other accessibility features where they are needed?
- If care needs increase, what are the options?
During the tour
Notice cleanliness, smells, lighting and noise. Look at the actual room being offered, the bathroom it uses, and the kitchen. If you can, talk with a current resident about what daily life is like.
